(See Matthew 2:1-12). And why is this relevant today? As Fr. Dwight Longenecker writes in his conclusion, "Does it matter who the Magi were and where they came from?" His answer is an emphatic yes, and for a very simple reason, "If, Matthew's simple Magi story is rooted in the history, politics, and economics of Palestine and northern Arabia of the early first century then the story is not a fabulous fiction after all. Read the references carefully and already downloaded one book. Always wondered what the back story was to many events(Paul in Arabia)that alone is worth the price of admission!. I will read the Bible with so much more clarity (not just skip over stuff I don't understand). He offers scholarly speculation based on historical data. He declares that history matters and truth matters. He separates legends from historical facts and assures readers that there is academic justification to declare the Magi as real persons. He explains the politics and mysticism of the time, debunks some popular notions, legends that elaborate on the Nativity story, and offers some convincing non-traditional conclusions.
